please help--runaway teen, missing [07 Sep 2010|07:00pm]

ETA: she was found and is home safe, in part due to the wonderful folks in this community. Bless.

This is my daughter Morgan. She's 16 and she ran away from home yesterday. Friends say she hopped a Megabus to the Carbondale area to attend the upcoming Rainbow Gathering Oct. 1. She's supposedly traveling with 2 guys named Tim and Josh, both Caucasian, early 20s or late teens, one with a "cholo tear" tattoo near his eye. She's 5'5", 120#, reddish-blonde hair, long bangs and sidelocks, short in back, always wears her jean vest with studs and patches on it. She may be begging for spare change. If you see her, *please* contact me and the police! 16 is too young to be running around the country on her own. I'm very worried for her safety. Thanks in advance.

Moving in [08 Jan 2010|07:00am]

Hello fellow Salukis, I'm a transfer student coming to Carbondale next week. My wife will be joining me that weekend sometime as soon as last minute details at our house are taken care of. So I will be hitting up the parking permit and housing first to get my stuff taken care of. When it the worst time of day to show up at those areas, since I need to get my vehicle passes and check into to housing at Evergreen Terrace and sign my lease agreement paperwork. Plus I still need to go and get books for classes

I need to know since I may be driving straight from Norfolk, VA (its a 15+ hour drive).  I will stop probably somewhere to sleep but depending on my time frame and when I leave from Norfolk. I plan to check in on Thursday next week and then turn in my rental truck on Friday afternoon. I will be needing some help with finding my way around campus. So if anyone is free to run around the campus and make sure I don't get too lost. I'm going to try and make it to the SOAR meeting hopefully that won't take all day since I've still got to turn in the truck the next day.

Hey everyone!

I know it's really early, but my parents want me to start getting estimates...

I need to find somewhere to live this summer and then for next school year. I'd like to stay on the west-ish side of town and would like somewhere a little quieter considering I'll be in grad school. Any suggestions/ recommendations?? Any and all input is appreciated :D

with little kisses,

New Years around CDale? [21 Dec 2009|07:26pm]

This is my first time in 23 years, spending New Years Eve anyplace but in Chicago.
Does anyone have any suggestions of things to do in the SoIl area?

Both of-age, and under-age examples would be appreciated.

national banks in Carbondale? [05 Nov 2009|08:55am]

Hello hello -
Could anyone tell me what national 'chain' banks are located in Carbondale (i.e. US Bank/Bank of America)? I'm not sure about this internet search I've pulled, it looks wonky...

berries [02 Jul 2009|02:49pm]

Okay, I haven't made it to any pools but the parents, dog (beast) and I just went to pick blueberries a few miles south of town (51, I think - usually I come from 64 and take whatever road it is that goes to Murphysboro and then hop over to Carbondale but it's not that one) - if you've got an itch for berries, call 893-2397. (:

swimming pool? [27 Jun 2009|11:19am]

Does anyone know of any pools open to the public (and location/$$$) in Carbondale? I know of some lakes already. Okay, a lake. But I'm looking for a pool to visit when I make a visit later this week.

Moving to Illinois SIU-C [12 Feb 2009|10:02pm]

[ mood | curious ]

Greetings SIU-C folks, I'm retiring from the Navy in the next few months and looking at returning home to Illinois to go back to college.  I'll be visiting several colleges and universities around the state next month.  I'm curious to hear your experiences at the campus and hear about the university other than the standard spiel that comes from the staff and paid bloggers.

While I've not yet  picked a major or minor (for that matter).  I'm still debating over what I want to do for another 20 years after I spend a little breather time in college. I'd like to hear about the campus and people's impression about the community around Carbondale. My wife and I are looking for a quite (and semi-normal) area to raise  a family as well as have fun as adults and as parents.

A few off the top of my head questions for anyone to answer:

Are there any local game and comics shop in the area?

Are there any local gaming (table top games/euro games) groups in the area?

What are the seasons/weather like lately?

Has campus life been changed by the economy?

Do students get enough time to meet with their advisors and are they helpful or useless?

Are the plenty of open park areas and recreational activities other than campus activities to pursue?

If you could stay in the area and raise children would it be worth it?

[11 Nov 2008|10:21am]

I'm looking for a place that will possibly buy my old computer tower / parts from it.
Does anyone know of such a place?

I know that I could likely go to a pawn shop around here, but I didn't know if I maybe could get a better deal from any computer stores for individual parts?

...and in case YOU were wondering, chances are you wouldn't want to buy it. It's a tower I've had all throughout high school & college (maybe 8ish years?). It still works fine, but it's real out of date, by computer standards.

Futon for sale [01 Jul 2008|01:02pm]

It's a bit early for incoming students, but for anyone who may be watching this community and looking for a cheap piece of apartment furniture, I have a futon for sale for $50 (cash only).

The frame is in great shape, the mattress is OK, but it's been a mattress for a few years and isn't as cushy as it once was, but it still sleeps and sits fairly well. I also have a mattress cover that zips up over the mattress itself and can be thrown into the washing machine for easy maintenance.

The whole thing comes apart and goes back together with just an Allen wrench.

I'd prefer that whoever wanted it come to pick it up themselves, but for a little extra $$, I can haul it to your place.

parking meters [26 Jun 2008|12:20pm]

[ mood | curious ]

Hello all -
Thanks for the suggestions and calendar links from my last post to the SIUC Community, they were great! I've got a restaurant for you if you're looking for something a bit off the beaten path - the Midland or Midway Inn, I can try to get more info about it if you're interested - as I recall, it felt a bit south and west of town.

Anyways, my mom was asking me if we (in Columbia, MO) have the same kind of parking meters with the "free" option - what!? Does anyone know what she was talking about and if so what the free option is all about/who it works for/how it works? It could be an imagination figment but I thought I'd check just in case.

Happy summer!

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

*While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff, and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the U.S.

stuff to do? [15 Apr 2008|10:18am]

Does anyone know of anything fun happening in Carbondale this weekend (and if the university/community happen to have a calendar for future reference)? (Earth Day events or anything like that, maybe if there is a film series?)

I'm coming to town to visit the parents and I'm not sure if they do anything other than walk their dog and they just moved there this summer...

So really any suggestions of things to do (ever) would be cool, it doesn't have to be specific to this weekend - we've been to eat at the Thai place, to some of the parks in the area (Giant City sticks out in my head) and to 17th Street BBQ in Murphysboro. Oh, also they go to the Farmer's Market on 13 (Main) sometimes so that's about all I know of to do in Carbondale.

[05 Apr 2008|11:48am]

[ mood | tired ]

Does anyone happen to have a bow that I could borrow for a photoshoot?
A quiver would be nice also, if you happened to have one.

Dick's Sporting Goods doesn't do rentals. haha!

Please let me know.

P.S. Thanks to all who replied to my earlier ad for models. If you replied and haven't heard back from me yet, please let me know. I'm sorry if I didn't...it's just been real hectic lately with shoots. Many thanks to those who I have already shot...and plenty thanks also to those that applied, and are still waiting for me to get to them. I still need one or two male models, I believe, so the application process is still open if you or anyone you know is still interested. The details are below. Many many females showed their interest. If you are reading this, I haven't cut anyone yet, and I am still going through them. Please be patient :-)

I will post the details of my show when the date comes closer.

English Graduate Program [05 Apr 2008|12:17am]

I just joined and I am not a student, but I've been accepted at SIU for my Ph.D. in English Lit. Are there any graduate students from the English department on this list willing to give me the dirt talk about the program and the department culture?
